Herman Nel grew up in Rouxville in the Vrystaat (Freestate). As a young boy he had a passion for motor cars.
He tells about how when his parents took the family to Durban on the coast for holidays, he would stand open mouthed at all the exotics motor cars in Durban.
He attended boarding school and by extra odd jobs and making coffee, which he would sell door to door in the early mornings, he managed to make extra pocket money. |

With this money he was able to buy himself his first toy motor cars, like the Dinky Toy models.
In those years when there wasn't a lot of money around these so called toys were in fact more of a luxury than toys. They were wrapped up in cottonwool when he went off to school and packed away in his drawer until he returned for the holidays. |
